Under contract with the Department of Human Services, two staff members from the Center for Disabilities and Development are stationed at DHS’s Division of Mental Health and Disability Services in Des Moines to coordinate Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (MIG) activities. This grant from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) focuses on providing technical assistance, policy analysis and administrative support to DHS to:

  • Increase the number of Iowans with disabilities employed in competitive jobs in the community
  • Increase the earning power of Iowans with disabilities

Examples of current MIG activities include:

  • Outreach to people with disabilities related to employment services and options (e.g. workshops on self-employment and work incentives)
  • Technical assistance to community rehabilitation providers to support their transition from sheltered employment to supported employment services
  • Support for benefits planning services
  • Participation in State Employment Leadership Network workgroups developing recommendations to better align state policies, funding, and measurement strategies to promote competitive employment
