Creating Accessible Homes and Workplaces through Universal Design
The Living Well Iowa (LWI) program at the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD) sponsors the "Accessible Homes and Workplaces through Universal Design" training initiative to increase awareness of universal design concepts for home and workplace modifications and appropriate products and resources. This initiative, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is a collaboration of LWI at CDD, Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa Program for Assistive Technology, the Midwest Accessibility Initiative, and the Upper Midwest Public Health Training Center at the University of Iowa College of Public Health.
The primary audience for this training includes professional home builders, remodeling contractors, and those in related building trades. The course would also benefit individuals with disabilities, family members and guardians, social workers, and other professionals who provide case management services.
The training includes a series of five online modules:
- Universal Design and Home Modifications
- Aging and Disability: Implications for Home Modifications and Independence
- Ramping Up for Independence: Design and Construction of Safe and Useable Ramps
- Bathroom Modifications
- Workplace Modifications
CDD makes this training series available to the public at no cost at Living Well Iowa - Universal Design.
