Positive Behavior Support Training

Positive Behavior Support Training for Iowa MFP Providers

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a set of research-based strategies used to increase quality of life and decrease problem behavior by teaching new skills and making changes in a person's environment.  PBS strategies are considered effective when interventions result in increases in an individual's success and personal satisfaction, and the enhancement of positive social interactions across work, academic, recreational, and community settings. Valued outcomes include increases in quality of life as defined by an individual's unique preferences and needs, and positive lifestyle changes that increase social belonging.

Money Follows the Person (MFP) demonstration provides opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities, or other related disabilities, to move out of intermediate care facilities into their own homes or apartments in the community of their choice. Many of these individuals have had a history of challenging behaviors and community providers report they need additional training to effectively support these individuals. MFP contracts with a behavioral specialist to provide training and consultation to providers, consumers, and families who are assisting a person who may be experiencing challenging behaviors. There is no charge to attend the training, and training materials are provided by the MFP grant. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity after the training to discuss questions or concerns in their organizations’ training program and to problem solve specific difficult cases.
